Laptop Buying
Guide

This buying guide will help you buy and keep the right
laptop for you. The laptop market has grown massively in
the last few years and there is a huge choice of laptops
for the consumer. Basically don’t panic as long as you
don’t jump at the first thing you see then you should get
the laptop you need. Most of the larger manufactures
(Apple, Dell, Gateway, Levono, Sony, Toshiba and HP) have a
number of different laptops that suit different needs, make
sure you know what you want before choosing.
1. Do think
about how you are going to use the
laptop
If you are a road warrior who is going to be carrying the
laptop with them weight can be one of the most important
considerations. Try to get your hands on your chosen laptop
(even if you are going to buy on-line it’s worth trying at
a store) this will give you a chance to see if it feels
light and rugged enough for your needs.
2. Do take
out an extended warranty
Usually Rules for Buying wouldn’t recommend taking out
extended warranty on products but for laptops it is vital.
Companies cram a lot of delicate technology into a very
small package to build laptops this can lead to a high
level of failures so it’s worth paying for the extended
warranty – 3 years minimum.
3. Do look at
the power supply
This seems like a strange one but I was recently given a
laptop by a company that was small except it had a huge
power supply transformer that came with it making it very
heavy to take both. Sometimes it is possible to get a
travel one from the supplier or a third party but this can
add to the expense.
