HDTV Buying
Guide

5. Do think
about all the inputs you will need
Most HDTVs come with a large number of inputs but only a
selection of each type. If you have a lot of HDMI, DVI or
component inputs check you will have enough inputs as it’s
a real pain swapping cables if you want to change from one
source to another.
6. Don’t
think size is everything
As with rule 1 you need to think how big you really need to
go with the HDTV. If you have a smallish room and you buy
anything over 40 inches standard TV transmissions will look
very fuzzy and make it unpleasant to watch. Saying that if
you are watching mostly HD sources going large is an
investment you won’t regret.
7. Do invest in high quality cables
There is no point buying an expensive HDTV and having a
great source of HDTV if you just us the cables that come
with it. These tend to be ok but will add some digital
‘noise’ to the signal defeating some of the reason to get
HDTV. So invest in good quality cables, they should be gold
connectors and shielded. The price of them might be a bit
scary but it is worth the investment.
8. Do work
out if you want LCD, Plasma or DLP
Each type has its pros and cons. DLP tends to be the lowest
cost for the size but will take up a lot of room, if you
have a very large room then this is a good option. Plasma
was the first flat HD technology and is the lowest cost for
this type. Plasma has some issues with burn in and
lifetime. LCD gives great pictures and will last a long
time but doesn’t show black very well and has a slightly
lower refresh rate.
9. Do shop
around before buying
Once you have decided what type of HDTV you want shop
around sometimes it’s worth looking at a slightly older
model of HDTV that will give you all the quality you will
need and you may be able to pick up a larger size.
Good luck buying.
